To collect, explore, interpret and exhibit the material and intellectual culture in Houston, the Southwest and the African Diaspora for current and future generations for all people.

Urban Souls Dance Company grew from a solo performed by founding artistic director Harrison Guy at the city-wide dance festival. dance Houston, on July 30, 2004.
Bert Long Gallery-Until his death on February 1, 2013.Bert Long, Jr. was one of the brightest lights in the Houston arts community. In recognition of his support of local artists, HMAAC has dedicated a gallery in Bert's name to allow the museum to annually exhibit the work of four artists working in the greater Houston area.
Exhibition costs and artist fees-HMAAC sponsored several exhibitions during the year requiring special set-ups and installations including shipping costs.
Consignment payout to artists
jazz Church-This is an endeavor by artist Tierney Malone to create a temporary institution dedicated to collecting and sharing the story of Houston's musical tribe.
David Jerimiah-Exhibit " On Foundation, Form and Future"
Deborah Mouton Residency-the first Black Poet Laureate of Houston engaged students from the Imani School, a private Christian school housed in the Power Center) . During her residency, Ms. Mouton edited her recent play, The World's Intermission, which centers on one family's experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
