In 2023, hsco maintained a 90% live release rate, in part, by connecting 1,234 animals with loving, adoptive homes and working diligently to return 72% of lost animals to their families. All animals that are adopted from hsco are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped prior to going home and often they receive specialized veterinary care and treatments, depending on their individual needs. In 2023, the hsco veterinary team completed 1,308 spay/neuter surgeries and 2,245 veterinary exams. Of these surgeries, 407 were for free-roaming community cats.
Thrift store: the hsco thrift store receives donated items such as clothes, household items, jewelry, and vehicles from the community on a daily basis. These items are carefully sorted, priced, and made ready for re-sale by our dedicated staff and volunteers. The net proceeds from the thrift store are used to fund vital shelter operations, making this program critical to the ongoing financial sustainability of the hsco. The hsco thrift store also supports our adoption program by housing available small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, etc.) and adopting them to loving families directly from the store.
Other programs: the hsco has cultivated a robust volunteer program over time and we host individual volunteers, court-mandated community service volunteers, and a wide variety of volunteer groups from schools, local businesses, and more. Last year, 742 hsco volunteers contributed nearly 43,000 service hours at the shelter and thrift store. Our foster care program also contributes a great deal to the overall care and welfare of shelter animals. In 2023, 323 animals received loving care in a foster home. Many fostered animals are neonate kittens, who would not survive without round the clock care that can only be offered via trained foster families. Our veterinary outreach program is focused on assisting families with vital resources that might otherwise be inaccessible due to financial or other hardships. In 2023 the hope pet food bank assisted 234 families with free pet food for their beloved family members. In early 2024 we welcomed our first veterinary outreach director, who will also serve as our main veterinarian on the mobile clinic. We're excited to continue reporting back to our supporters on how this program is serving a vital need by increasing access to veterinary services (like spay/neuter and vaccinations) for the underserved in our region, with a particular focus on veterinary deserts like warm springs and christmas valley.
