Mission

At hyde square task force, youth are at the heart of what we do. We believe youth have immense potential, yet at the same time research tells us that they face many obstacles. When hstf was founded in the late 1980s, a coalition of neighbors and community leaders felt a sense of urgency to address the violence and economic and social challenges facing the hyde/jackson square neighborhood of jamaica plain. Hstf now engages over 1,000 youth ages 6-25 in college and career preparation, afro-latin arts mastery and cultural enrichment, and community-building initiatives. In doing so, we ensure that youth have the arts and educational opportunities they need and deserve in order to be successful, and that their voices and cultures are valued and celebrated in boston's latin quarter and beyond. Our work is guided by our mission: to develop the skills of youth and their families, so they are empowered to enhance their own lives and build a strong and vibrant community.

Programs

2 programs

Hstf is located in the heart of boston's latin quarter cultural district and acts as the district's managing partner. Hstf's creative development & community engagement work touches the lives of thousands of community members each year and fosters cultural placekeeping and vibrance in our community while promoting cultural diversity in boston. This work includes hstf's annual event series of no-cost, year-round, public arts performances, events, and cultural activities. Hstf also engages in collaborative events with other local organizations where hstf contributes live music or art-making. Creative development & community engagement includes boston's afro-latin artists network (balan).

Expenses: $456K

Hstf's creative development & community engagement work also serves approximately 200 youth ages 6 to 18 annually through weekly arts enrichment classes in the areas of afro-latin dance, music, and theatre. Programs include artes culturales (ac) arts enrichment classes for youth ages 6 to 18 and learn through dance (ltd) in-school-arts program for second graders at a local boston public school. Creative development & community engagement work also includes living safely in jackson square (lsjs) youth leadership and community organizing opportunities for local youth ages 15 to 19.
