Mission

The mission of the iorc is to bring people together to build grassroots power through community organizing, leadership development and civic engagement, and take action to promote and protect health, safety, dignity & justice for frontline communities, including farm workers.

Programs

3 programs

The farmworker justice campaign aims to unite directly affected communities, fostering collective empowerment. Our objectives include raising awareness about the impacts of heat, smoke, and pesticides on farmworkers, as well as driving essential policy changes to safeguard idahos indispensable workforce. 2024 deliverables: 1. Six classes for farmworkers on protecting themselves from heat, smoke, and pesticides. 2. Collected about ten stories on farmworkers on how climate change affects their work. 3. Social media around education on being protected from heat, smoke, and pesticides. 4. Provided supplies to farmworkers to protect themselves from heat and smoke. 5. Stopped legislation in idaho that would have provided immunity to pesticide manufacturers.

Ag & food: iorc is dedicated to growing community power amongst latinx farmworkers in the state. This includes providing leadership development programs for community members and developing strategic campaigns to push for policies that benefit those in the community. Goal 1: protect farmworker health. Monitor and strengthen aerial pesticide application rules in idaho. In 2020, two dozen farmworkers were poisoned from one incorrect pesticide application by an airplane applicator. Since then, iorc has worked with those injured and the larger latinx farmworker community to protect and expand on existing regulations in the state pertaining to aerial applications of pesticides. Iorc will continue over the two years to push for stronger regulations. Goal 2: build strong farmworker-led organizing. Iorc will continue to build out its organizing work with latinx farmworkers by recruiting, training, and engaging community members on issues that impact them the most.
