Mission
The Indo-American Center creates and provides services that facilitate South Asian immigrant adjustment, socio-economic wellbeing, and community through direct service, education and advocacy.
Programs

Public Benefits:IAC educates clients on eligible benefits and helps them apply for assistance inhealthcare, food, transit, senior housing, etc. Case managers educate and guide clients through complex procedures, overcome language barriers, and counter misinformation.
Adult Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL):The ESL/literacy program provides culturally competent English language educational instruction to help immigrants adjust and become self-sufficient through learning Adult Literacy:English. Classes are free of charge and offered in four levels of instruction from beginner to advanced over the course of twelve weeks. The impact of the program results in adults who are able to effectively communicate in English to get a job, earn a drivers license, speak with their childrens teachers, etc. Parent Mentor Program:IAC recruits parents to support teachers and students in Chicago Public Schools. Through weekly workshops at IAC, parents build leadership, confidence, & family-school connections. Partner schools benefit while parents gain skills,certifications & jobs.
Community Health:IAC uses a community health worker (CHW) model to provide tailored health education sessions on diabetes, hepatitis B, vaccines, mental health tools & more. Through outreach events, workshops & screenings, IAC promotes health literacy, prevention, and wellness.
Seniors Program:The Seniors program is designed to help South Asian immigrant seniors adjust to their new community within the United States and lead more independent lives. Each weekday, Seniors enjoy a vegetarian, South Asian lunch, cooked on-site and provided to seniors free of charge. The program incorporates education, active participation in group activities, and hands-on learning.
Community and Civic Engagement:The Indo-American Center (IAC) leads voter registration & education sessions on immigrant rights, voting, and census participation. Community navigators facilitate community connections and access to resources available to them.
