Marketing, communication, and distributionisland press communicates information on environmental issues and solutions to governmental, professional, and non-profit staff and their organizations; businesses; students and professors; and general readers. Our publications are distributed worldwide in print and electronic formats, including through amazon and amazon's kindle, at bookstores, through online retailers, and via the island press website. They are often translated by foreign publishers; in 2024, 20 island press titles were licensed for audio and translation into numerous languages, including simplified chinese, korean, and portuguese. Over the course of the year, island press' marketing team secured almost 2,200 media placements, including 171 book reviews. We secured media coverage for our books and authors in large national outlets, including eight in the "new york times", nine in "medium", five for "npr", and 13 in "", to bring environmental solutions to the public. All of island press' media placements during 2024 potentially gathered over 14 billion views.
Program services/technical assistancethrough our short-form program (formerly the urban resilience project (urp)), island press improves the communications capacity of emerging leaders and educate practitioners on the latest environmental thinking and solutions, increasing their capacity to implement change. We work closely with movement leaders and emerging thinkers to help them tell their story through articles, blog posts, op-eds, and place them in media outlets to share environmental lessons widely. We provide editorial and marketing support to put these voices into the national conversation. As a result, we published 91 original pieces in 2024, a 47% increase in the number of short-form pieces published over 2023. The pieces had 700 million potential views, and we garnered 3,500 social media engagements for the op-eds, essays, and articles, 1,000 more engagements than 2023.in 2024, the short-form program worked with groups like groundwork usa, the american council for an energy-efficient economy, and deep south center for environmental justice to publish articles and more. For example, in october 2024, we helped the environmental health coalition publish an op-ed ("measure g will help all san diego commuters, not just transit riders") educating voters about a ballot measure that would increase transit funding. To further the reach of our books and authors, our partnership program created and implemented 128 events involving island press authors in 2024, including webinars, conference appearances, podcasts, in-person events, and book club meetings with writers, reaching more citizens, professionals, and advocates working on resilience solutions. 8,265 people attended island press webinars put on in partnership with the smart growth network (sgn), a national alliance of advocates, practitioners, policymakers, and local leaders working towards a shared vision for land use and infrastructure policies and actions that result in healthy, sustainable, equitable, and prosperous communities for all. Six of sgn's top 10 most popular youtube videos are from island press. Ultimately, island press strengthens the environmental movement by giving professionals and advocates actionable information for creating a healthier, more sustainable world.
