Mission

Joseph Maley Foundation was founded in 2008, in honor of the life and spirit of Joseph Maley, a young man with severe disabilities who inspired others and who passed away in August 2008 at age 18 from leukemia. The Foundation's mission statement is, "Celebrating differences and cultivating an inclusive community through education and service of youth in Greater Indianapolis." The Foundation's vision is to lead the cultivation of a wholly inclusive community by educating and serving youth.

Programs

6 programs

The joseph maley puppets program is a unique way to teach children empathy, compassion, understanding, respect, and acceptance of all with the help of child-size puppets and carefully considered curriculum. In 2024, joseph maley foundation's puppet troupes performed in conjunction with other joseph maley foundation programs. 32 students participated as puppeteers in 2024.

Junior board/young professionals board - joseph maley foundation junior board of directors is comprised of a dynamic group of high school students. Joseph maley foundation young professionals board is comprised of recent graduates and professionals aged 21 to 30. Junior board and young professional board members support joseph maley foundation's mission of "celebrating differences and cultivating an inclusive community through education and service of youth in greater indianapolis and act as ambassadors of the foundation's programs, engaging their peers in service, and experiencing what it means to take on leadersip roles in nonprofit organizations. 17 high schoolers participated as a part of the junior board in 2024. Additionally, 17 recent graduates participated as part of the young professionals board in 2024.

Hope - health through outreach, personal perspectives, and engagement brings emotional, social, and mental health awareness and advocacy to students in preschool through twelfth grades. As a partner with the school in instructing the child, hope conveys understanding and awareness of psychological and physical wellbeing. Students who participate in the program are equipped with tools to advocate for their own and their peers' health. In 2024, the hope program served over 1,100 children.

Joseph maley family support serves as a bridge between families navigating the individualized education program (iep) process and the schools their children attend. Jmfs offers services to parents and guardians, attorneys, siblings, and educators. This program served over 60 families in 2024 in addition to providing continuing education to 108 attorneys.

Joseph maley fitness (adaptive athletics) - this program uses adapted sports and activities to nurture a strong sense of self-esteem and positive self-image for both our participants and volunteers. Athletes are teamed with trained volunteers and enjoy the physical and emotional benefits of exercise. In 2024, athletes participated in various events throughout indianapolis with joseph maley foundation volunteers.
