The candidates selected as future leaders of montgomery use their skills to create a group project designed to directly impact the community and address an identified need. For 2024, the legacy class led impactful projects across the river region, including: developing a bike trail to encourage outdoor activity, furnishing a computer lab and providing school uniforms and tutoring support, promoting youth engagement and positivity through targeted digital media outreach, creating a welcoming indoor social space for children, renovating a teen to work area to include workspace and new computers, and updating a recreational area. For 2024, the torchbearers class applied their leadership skills to service projects that directly addressed community needs. Their efforts included: creating a program for high school juniors and seniors to build leadership skills, explore community issues, appreciate diversity, and commit to service, establishing permanent storywalks in parks across montgomery county to promote childhood literacy, outdoor activity, and family engagement, converting an underused conference room into a hygiene pantry and new office space for a leadership team, revitalizing a garden area, and enhancing the facility's curb appeal by redoing landscaping, repainting the lighthouse, and installing a new center sign at the beacon center.
