Leavenworth Historical Museum Association

National fred harvey museum. This museum is in the family home of fred harvey - famous restauranteer known for his string of restaurantsand hotels along the santa fe railroad route from chiacago to los angeles. Artifacts from the family and the harvey company are on display in the adjacent carriage house. Guests may tour the mansion which is on the national registry of historic properties. Still in its formative stage, the home is being restored by dedicated volunteers. It is open for pre-arranged tours and events at this time. Admission is charged.

First city museum. This museum highlights the large role leavenworth (the first city in kansas) played in the development of the area and its contribution to the settling of the west. Four areas of concentration are prisons, indian tribes, businesses and famous people and the military. The museum has hosted the filming of a national television episode and a private film, both utilizing the prison displays. Recently the prision area has been enlarged and a childrens room nears completion. This museum is also operated soley by volunteers. Tours are available on a regular basis and by appointment. Admission is charged.

Parent organization. Receives general dues and pays general operating expenses for the entire museum system.
