Mission

The lyme historians, inc. Was founded in 1961 with the purpose of helping to document the town's history, keeping it alive and relevant to the present day by maintaining exhibits and collections and acquiring books, maps, documents and artifacts pertaining to lyme, new hampshire.

Programs

3 programs

The lyme historians sponsor events throughout the year, including the annual meeting with guest speaker, historic tours of sites such as the lyme cemetery and abandoned homestead cellar holes, and saturday social hours where a longtime resident talks about their experiences growing up in lyme. The lyme historians also archive historic documents including journals, deeds, photographs, vital records from local churches, and an ever- expanding database of genealogy records.

2024 was another successful year for the lyme historians. In addition to regular saturday hours where the museum and barn are open for public viewing, we held several other notable events. The highlight of our april annual meeting was a presentation of the history and construction of covered bridges in new hampshire and lyme by a notable author. This meshed nicely with the ongoing historic preservation of the town's edgell bridge. The historians hosted a successful porch party over the summer that attracted many residents for conversation and learning. During our season we were also fortunate to have several long time lyme residents discuss their own small town life experiences during our second saturday series. In late summer, we hosted our first outdoor sing-along, where guests joined an accomplished musician in singing a range of songs spanning 150 years of american history. In the fall, we once again brought to life several notable former residents of lyme during our popular cemetery tour. Attendees learned the history of individuals spanning the late 1700's to early 20thcentury and got a small glimpse into what life might have been like back then. The highlight of the winter holiday season was a well- attended wassail party where singing was once again front and center as guests caroled to the music of our estes pump organ.

The lyme historians continue to work with classes of the lyme elementary school to explore the history of lyme. This year the kindergarten children visited the museum to discover the old toys, phonograph wax cylinders and rope bed.
