As reported previously, the lynchburg area veterans council inc purchased the residential property located at 1309 garfield avenue city of lynchburg virginia; the birthplace and childhood home of desmond t doss, wwii medal of honor recipient whose story was made famous in the hollywood movie "hacksaw ridge". We dedicated this home on october 19, 2019 as the "desmond t doss veterans home." a total of eight previously homeless veterans have lived there since then. The expenses listed above represent real estate taxes, insurance, maintenance, and utilities of this 116 year old frame house. We are unable to put a price on the value of providing quality shelter for eight veterans who were living on the streets in central virignia.
Lavc provides temporary shelter (motel rooms) for homeless veterans in the lynchburg area, until they can be entered into the program operated by the central virginia continuum of care, of which lavc is a voluntary contributing member. Lavc considers this both a program vital to what we do and an expense of the program.
