Legacy forest protection: mason county climate justice defends local legacy forests through legal action and grassroots community organizing. We bring together a broad and diverse coalition of people committed to protecting our oldest, most biodiverse and structurally complex forests for environmental, economic, recreational, health, safety, spiritual, and cultural purposes. In 2024, in collaboration with our partners, we saved 100 acres of public forest on harstine island and funded legal cases to protect 214 additional acres of public forests in mason county.
Just transition: through coalition work and leadership development trainings, mccj works for a just transition from an extractive economy to a zero-waste regenerative economy that allows all forms of life to thrive in balance. In 2024, we launched a pilot youth leadership development initiative called cedar stewards of mason county (csmc). Named by the youth themselves, csmc began as a way to bring youth voices to local policy, such as affordable housing and climate resilience. Leading their peers and adult neighbors in creating a more equitable future, csmc youth have won policy changes, conducted local research, and developed their skills as mason county's next generation of leaders.
