Mission
Medicine for Humanity is a medical care and teaching organization dedicated to restoring dignity, hope, and quality of life to women in the developing world. Founded in 1995 on the principle that ensuring the health of mothers leads to healthier communities, we provide surgical care and build sustainable programs to train the next generation of doctors. Since 2009, our work has been based in Mbarara, in southwestern Uganda, with a focus on treating obstetric fistula and other pelvic floor disorders resulting from childbirth injuries. An estimated 200,000 Ugandan women suffer from obstetric fistula, which causes chronic incontinence that can lead to infections, kidney disorders, as well as social isolation and stigmatization. Fistula and pelvic floor disorders affect the poorest and most powerless in society and though most can be cured with surgery, a vast gap exists between the number of women needing care and the number of skilled health workers able to provide it.
