Mhani's advocacy efforts include our professional guardianship program, which advocates proper medical care and housing for individuals with incapacitating conditions. In 2024, we served 206 individuals. As court-assigned legal guardians, we advocate for some of our community's most vulnerable individuals, who face mental incapacitation due to conditions such as intellectual and developmental disabilities, age-related disorders, mental illness, dementias, traumatic brain injuries, and chronic conditions. Many of these individuals face significant barriers, including limited financial resources, co-occurring medical and mental health conditions, isolation, exploitation risks, and difficulty navigating complex care systems. Without the ability to make sound medical decisions independently and lacking available family or friends to assist them, the court appoints mhani as their legal guardian. We act as their advocates, ensuring that decisions are appropriate, individualized, and aligned with the principle of least restrictive care. Our services operate 24/7, providing prompt responses to clients' immediate needs. Each guardian collaborates with care providers, medical professionals, and supportive family members to ensure the best possible care. By helping clients build supportive relationships through community programs and services, we reduce isolation and improve overall mental health. Our professional guardianship services are a voice for the voiceless, protecting individuals from exploitation, neglect, or abuse while ensuring access to essential care and resources. Through strong advocacy, oversight, and compassionate support, we help restore dignity, stability, and hope for those who need it most.
