Mission

Mlk health and wellness community development corporation (mlk-cdc) is charged with facilitating the revitalization of south los angeles that includes the mlk medical campus in repurposing underutilized buildings for expansion of desperately needed health care, mental health services, and health-related educational facilities for underserved populations, including 4,000 teens and children in foster care.

Mlk-cdc facilitated an annual grant of $25,000 for the mlk outpatient center ("mlk-opc") to continue health screening outreach to vulnerable population for mammograms, breast ultrasound biopsies, chemotherapy infusions over 5,000 women visited the center in 2024. Mlk-opc also offered influenza vaccine and hiv, pep education during those visits. The center serves a majority of underserved population and has made significant impact through providing increased access to pap smear screening and mammography, thus catching and treating premalignant lesions prior to them becoming cancer.

Mlk-cdc has been working closely with the charles r. Drew university of medicine and science ("cdu") since 2016. Cdu is located within walking distance of the jac and the mlk outpatient center and works closely with the foster care clinic and the mlk- outpatient center in serving their underserved populations. During the covid pandemic, cdu staffed the vaccine centers at the mlk medical campus and is actively engaged with the local community through its various clinical services. Cdu is embarking on expansion of its 750-student campus by developing an adjacent 11 acres that will provide student housing, additional classroom and an athletic field.
