Permanent collection acquisitionsthe montgomery museum of fine arts is the premier art collecting institution in central alabama, serving the tri-county river region by exhibiting its collections for the benefit of the public. The collection focuses primarily on american art, however significant additions in other collecting areas are important to developing the collections, now numbering more than 5,000 objects. In fy 2023-2024, the museum acquired three paintings: george tooker, table i, 1959, egg tempera on wood panel, gift of the ida belle young art acquisition fund, 2023.8, douglas bourgeois, the enigma orchestra, 2005, oil on wood panel, montgomery museum of fine arts association purchase, 2023.9 and henry ossawa tanner, street in tangier, about 1912, oil on canvas, gift of the ida belle young art acquisition fund, 2024.1. The museum also acquired a major print by sculptor/printmaker willie cole, man spirit mask, 1999, triptych: photo-etching with embossing and hand-coloring on paper (left); screen print with lemon juice and scorching on paper (center); photo-etching and woodcut on paper (right), gift of charles m. Young fine prints & drawings llc., glastonbury, connecticut in memory of mark m. Johnson, mmfa director, 1994-2017 and montgomery museum of fine arts association purchase, 2024.2.1-.3.

Exhibitionsin addition to semi-permanent installations of art from the museum's permanent collection, the museum offers temporary exhibitions that range in length from 8 to 12 weeks.
