The association advances the value of music study and music making to society and supports the professionalism of music teachers.

MTNA hosts competitions in which students participate. These competitions are both divisional and national. The competitions are designed to showcase the quality of teaching provided to the students as well as to recognize excellence among the student musicians.
MTNA publishes a bi-monthly magazine in order to foster professional development and growth for its members.
