Standards development - a major focus of the association is the development, publication, and dissemination of timely consensus codes and standards. Adoption, use, and enforcement of these documents serve to minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other hazards in all aspects of contemporary activity. Nfpa standards are developed by about 264 committees, each of which represents a balance of affected interests.
Membership - nfpa's membership is comprised of approximately 37,000 individuals. The majority of the members reside in the united states; overall members represent 123 nations with a majority being in north america but growing internationally.
Training and certification - nfpa trains 50,000 members and non-members in code navigation and application. The training is provided at both face-to-face seminars and online events, and as self-paced online learning. Nfpa also supports fire protection, the fire service, electrical safety and building professionals through certification programs.
Public education - the public education division provides the technical foundation for nfpa's fire and life safety education messages and outreach strategies for the general public, fire departments and other educators.
International - nfpa has representatives in canada, china, mexico and united arab emirates. The association undertakes the translation of key standards, provides training to a wide range of safety professionals and works in varied collaborative relationships with organizations that share our mission and vision around the world.
