The organization was established in 1891 to preserve colonial heritage. The national society of colonial dames of america in maryland (nscda-md) has operated the historic mount clare museum house in baltimore since 1917. They have also established an annual scholarship essay contest for high schoolers enabling the winners to travel to washington dc for a week of citizenship education about the national government.
