The nativity extended day program ran from 3:30pm until 6:00pm and included a 75 minute session of one-on-one personal tutoring for the students to ensure they completed daily homework assignments and understood the material; followed by an enrichment session which included, on alternate days, fine arts programs (including art, music, and robotics) and physical fitness activities (including jazzercise, basketball, distance running and volleyball). Students also receive a meal during this time. This program recognizes published research on the importance of extended academic and wellness programs on improving the educational outcomes of at-risk students.
The nativity summer program is an important component of the nativity educational model and all students are required to attend. This unique four week program is designed to ensure academic continuity and enrichment for our students during the summer months as well as provide unique experiences that enhance their leadership skills, personal values and team-building. The program ran from mid-july through early-august and was divided into three parts: 1)participation in a one week science camp at nazareth college where students participated in hands-on experiments and active learning, 2)a two week academic and enrichment day camp which focused on core ela, writing and math skills in the morning and experimental programs like forensic science, robotics, computer technology and service programs in the afternoon; and 3) a six day overnight camp experience at camp asbury where students lived and worked together to fostering team-building and personal responsibility.
