Mission

NatureServe is the global leader in data, science and technology to conserve biodiversity.

Programs

2 programs

Conservation Products and Services: NatureServe and the NatureServe Network develop and manage the most comprehensive data for over 100,000 species and ecosystems, answering fundamental questions about what exists, where it is found, and how it is doing. We serve this information to the public through our flagship data delivery product NatureServe Explorer, the authoritative and free online guide for the plants, animals, and ecosystems in North America. We provide direct access to geospatial data through NatureServe Explorer Pro and our open data Conservation GeoHub. We also provide advanced ecological modeling services to predict species habitat and assess landscape condition and vulnerability.

Expenses: $2.0M

Technology Research and Development & Technology Data Management: NatureServe develops and maintains Biotics, the biodiversity information management system that serves as a common operating platform for state and provincial NatureServe Network programs to assess the status and map the locations of imperiled species and ecosystems. The Biotics database serves as the backbone behind NatureServe Explorer and state environmental review tools that are also powered by NatureServe technology. We are also exploring how to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate our scientific assessments.
