Mission

New Century Chamber Orchestra, a virtuoso, conductorless string ensemble founded in 1992, presents performances of extraordinary quality in the San Francisco Bay Area with a commitment to innovation, education, and accessibility.

Programs

2 programs

Dedicated to virtuosic performances of chamber orchestra masterworks, New Century also champions the future of the genre through frequent commissions of new music and boundary-pushing collaborations across artistic disciplines. The ensemble maintains an intimate relationship with audiences by performing in local venues throughout the Bay Area and beyond, and by connecting musical history to the voices of living composers and the cultural conversations of today. Recent commissions include works by Tan Dun, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Nicolas Benavides, Mark Adamo, and Jake Heggie.{Achievements continued at 4c}

Under Daniel Hopes direction, New Century has expanded its touring and recording profile. Following its inaugural European tour in 2019, the orchestra returned to Europe in 2023, performing at prestigious venues and festivals across Germany and Poland, including the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Rheingau Festival, and the Philharmonie Essen. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the orchestra reached a global audience of more than 400,000 through its participation in Daniel Hopes Hope@Home digital concert series. In 2023, New Century released its debut album on the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label, featuring newly commissioned works and earning international acclaim.
