Mission

New Ways Ministry serves as a bridge between lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer (LGBTQ+) Catholics and the institutional Church. Its most significant activities are educational programs about Catholicism, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

The International Program promotes LGBTQ education and solicits information beyond the U.S. Two New Ways Ministry staff members attended the International Synod in Rome in October 2024, as press representatives for Bondings 2.0. 4 additional staff members, together with an intersex woman, a transgender man, parents of a transgender daughter, and a medical doctor who gives gender affirming care met privately with Pope Francis at his residence.

The CMI project supports spiritual development for gay priests, deacons, and men religious. This year the program included a retreat for gay priests, brothers, and deacons at Siena Retreat Center in Racine, Wisconsin, Feb. 19-22, 2024, facilitated by James Alison for 23 retreatants.

The Bridge Building Award was presented to Bishop John Stowe for his strong, compassionate, and prophetic voice in calling church leaders and people in the pews to a more Christian understanding of LGBTQ+ people. More than 100 people gathered at Trinity Washington University on November 15, 2024, to honor this courageous and compassionate bishop.

The Catholic Parents Network project supported a retreat for LGBTQ Catholics, parents, pastoral ministers, and other interested persons, Feb. 16-18, 2024. James Alison facilitated the retreat at Siena Retreat Center in Racine, Wisconsin. for 34 retreatants.

The Weaving the Journey project presents educational and supportive programs for lesbian nuns, congregational leaders, formation/vocation personnel and all congregations of women religious. New Ways Ministry sponsored a retreat for lesbian and queer members of religious congregations at Siena Retreat Center in Racine, Wisconsin, Sept. 5-8, 2024, for 23 women religious and published a newsletter with commentaries from retreatants.

The Networking Project provides a means to network with other Catholic or LGBTQ organizations. New Ways Ministry networked with the Association of U.S. Catholic Priests, Catholic Organizations for Renewal, Outreach, the Leadership Roundtable, and the American Academy of Religion.

The Hispanic Outreach program included a gathering, June 21-23, 2024, held outside Chicago with five Hispanic leaders and three New Ways Ministry staff. In a synodal process, participants identified ten concrete proposals to develop LGBTQ+ ministry with Hispanic Catholics.
