NCTM HAS 12 REELS OF ORAL INTERVIEWS WITH FORMER EMPLOYEES OF SPENCER SHOPS CONDUCTED IN THE 1970S. THE GOAL IS TO DIGITIZE AND TRANSCRIBE THESE INTERVIEWS AND BE PUT ONLINE FOR PUBLIC ACCESS. TRANSCRIPTION OF THE INTERVIEWS WILL ADDRESS ACCESSIBILITY TO THOSE WHO ARE DEAF OR HEARING IMPAIRED, AND WOULD MAKE THE INTERVIEWS TEXT SEARCHABLE. IN 1896, SOUTHERN RAILWAY BROKE GROUND ON A NEW REPAIR FACILITY, SPENCER SHOPS, NAMED IN HONOR OF ITS FIRST PRESIDENT, SAMUEL SPENCER, AS WAS THE NAME OF THE NEW TOWN. AT ITS PEAK, SPENCER SHOPS EMPLOYED 3,000 PEOPLE IN MANAGEMENT AND SKILLED TRADES. IN EARLY DAYS OF TRANSPORTATION HISTORY, RAILROADS WERE A CENTRAL PART OF AMERICAN LIVES. SPENCER SHOPS PLAYED A CRITICAL ROLE IN OUR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FOR CITIZENS AND BUSINESSES. THE ORAL INTERVIEWS PROVIDE A KEY RESOURCE IN THE DAILY LIVES, HISTORY OF SPENCER SHOPS, WORK, AND CULTURE OF RAILROAD WORKERS IN SPENCER.
