The mission of ochs is to serve as a resource for pets and their people, control pet overpopulation through affordable and accessible spay and neuter services, and care for and promote adoption of the thousands of homeless and neglected dogs and cats that come through our doors each year.

Transport program - in 2024 ochs continued its transport program through grants funded by aspca. These grants provide for transportation of animals from the city of starkville animal shelter and partnering shelters in surrounding counties to shelters in locations where animals are scarce. In 2024, we transported appoximately 462 dogs and 1,726 cats from our shelter and our partner shelters.

Expenses: $12K

Low cost spay /neuter program - in 2024, ochs received funding from aspca to continue funding its low-cost spay/neuter program for low-income community members. The partnership with the college of veterinary medicine at mississippi state university provided a veterinary technician in addition to our primary veterinarian. We continue to offer surgeries for modest cost to community members for clients of this program. In addition, we provide feral cat colony trap/neuter/release programs in our county. In 2024, this program aided in the spay/neuter of 2,000 dogs and cats from our community.
