Students who were in 6th grade through 12th grade were eligible to participate in the wisconsin school music association's district sole & ensemble festival. Fifty-tw0 (52) students from 14 participating schools prepared 57 solos and/or ensembles and performed them for an adjudicator. Each student received a rating, verbal and written comments regarding their performance from the adjudicator. Three students from two schools advanced to and performed at the state level. Solo & ensemble festival encourages students to improve their music skills and to strive to reach a higher level of performance, gaining poise and self-confidence. Overture band programs also offered its more advanced students the opportunity to participate in overture's honor band. Honor band is an extra-curricular activity that provides the students that participate an expanded music repertoire with music that is more challenging (both technically and musically), a larger group band experience, and two performances. Twenty-nine (29) students from twelve schools participated in honor band. Students who participate in honor band share what they learn with their peers in their own (usually smaller) school bands through the leadership and maturity they gain from their experiences in honor band.
