Summer STEAM Camp- A six-week on-site program offered outdoor activities that included rock climbing, canoeing, and chess for 50 high needs youth. Activities fostered team building, social emotional learning, and life skills while reinforcing literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking skills. Students learned coding and computer design. Students explored equestrian careers and horseback riding. Chess, basketball, dance, and arts and crafts were also studied. ALL campers participated in a science club learning about building solar powered cars, electronic robots built from scratch, and detecting acids and bases. Thirteen former P.E.A.C.E students were hired for summer youth employment opportunities. Job training included work habits and financial literacy sessions. P.E.A.C.E. is an acronym for Partnerships in Education to Avoid Criminal Justice System Entry, and our mission is to reduce educational inequity and prevent drug abuse by providing enrichment opportunities for the children of our community. All activities helped support our mission in the post pandemic climate.
CHESS 40 high needs students learned the fundamentals of chess while those expressing interest became members of the ChessPEACES team that practices weekdays and Saturdays. Monies support the purchase of materials along with the salary of the chess coach.
