Mission

To advance the no-kill movement, reduce pet homelessness, and find every dog and cat a loving home.

Programs

4 programs

Animal care and foster - our animal care team is comprised of dedicated staff who ensure the daily needs and well-being of all sheltered and fostered pets are met. Foster coordinators collaborate with pets in need's significant foster network to place animals in temporary homes, helping to expand shelter capacity while providing animals with love and support on their journey to adoption. Foster volunteers play a vital role by temporarily opening their homes, allowing us to care for more animals, including those with special needs. Additionally, time in foster allows animals the opportunity to learn how to live successfully in homes and helps to alleviate stress. The animal care and foster team found foster homes for 763 pets this year.

Expenses: $1.9M

Adoptions - the adoptions team provides daily care and enrichment for in-shelter animals, facilitates adoption matches, and offers guidance to potential adopters, all while championing barrier-free adoptions to help place more animals in loving homes. Pets in need also maintains a large and dedicated volunteer base that supports various organizational activities. The development and communications department drives adoption efforts through a comprehensive marketing program, utilizing the website, social media, email campaigns, and special adoption events and promotions. The adoptions team found homes for 1,316 pets this year.

Expenses: $984K

Outreach and education - pets in need embraces a community-based approach to saving and improving lives, extending its services beyond shelter walls to directly assist pets and the families who love them. This industry-leading "access to care" model ensures that pet parents, regardless of socioeconomic status, have the resources they need to keep their pets at home and out of shelters.services are provided through pets in need's three dedicated clinics:- vaccine clinic: offers low-cost and free vaccinations and microchipping to protect pets and support community health.- spay/neuter clinic: provides affordable spay/neuter surgeries to reduce pet overpopulation and promote responsible pet ownership.- community veterinary clinic: focuses on wellness care, offering accessible and affordable veterinary services for pets in under-resourced families.to further expand accessibility, many services are also delivered via pets in need's two mobile vans, operating at various community locations. Pets in need teaches fear-free handling, responsible pet guardianship, and the importance of the human-animal bond to young people and adults through a number of shelter engagement opportunities, community-based events, and partnerships with youth organizations, schools, and humane education non-profits.

Expenses: $335KGrants: $44K

Behavior - an onsite behavior team collaborates with volunteers to train and enrich dogs, enhancing their adoptability. Our large volunteer corp. Works daily with dogs for behavior support and modification, enrichment, and emotional connection to mitigate stress and amplify behavioral well-being. Behavior services are essential for our dogs to learn basic commands, walk well on a leash and be social in public places, maintain emotional stability, and transition smoothly into a home setting. Our dedicated volunteers also works with cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs, socializing them to increase their chances of adoption success and to mitigate fear, stress, and boredom. Pets in foster-to-adopt programs or those already adopted are more likely to experience successful placements after receiving guidance and support from our behaviorists.we also offer affordable and accessible behavior training, online and in-person, to support pet parents in the bay area (and beyond) to bond with their furry family members and ensure their animals' emotional and behavioral wellness.
