Mission

Physicians for a Healthy California is dedicated to improving community health, growing a diverse physician workforce and promoting health equity. Our programs continue to improve public health, provide clinical practice support and improvement, and address the social determinants of health and access to care.

CalHealthCares administers loan repayment for educational debt to California physicians and dentists who provide care to Medi-Cal patients, which represent one-third of Californians and half of the state's children. The Department of Health Care Services has funded the program through the state tobacco tax revenues, Proposition 56, and contracted with PHC to administer the statewide program. Eligible physicians can apply for up to $300,000 in loan repayment in exchange for a five-year service obligation. Eligible dentists can apply for up to $300,000 in exchange for a five-year service obligation or a practice support grant of up to $300,000 in exchange for a ten-year service obligation. In 2024, the majority of CalHealthCares' first group of awardees completed their five-year service term, receiving over $52.8 million in education loan repayment.

Physicians for a Healthy California has smaller programs that focuses on its mission. AstraZeneca provided a contribution of 200,000 for the purpose of supporting the Lung Cancer Awareness and Screening Program. The California HealthCare Foundation awarded a grant for the purpose of providing support for the "Chief Health Equity Officer Landscape" to identify and catalog Chief Health Equity Officers or equivalent senior staff leading health equity efforts across California's acute care finance and delivery system. The organization contributed $1 million to California Medical Association to educate the public relating to Medi-Cal.
