Mission

The Racial Justice Coalition includes representatives of organizations in Asheville-Buncombe County with racial justice in our missions. We come together in commitment to racial equity and to advocate for the rights of people of color.

The RJC has also sought to educate the community about what the Reparations movement entails. In the relevant fiscal year, RJC staff conducted regular Lunch and Learn sessions at which attendees were provided with lunch and a lecture and discussion about one of the five Impact Focus Areas identified by the Reparations Commission (Housing, Education, Economic Development, Criminal Justice, and Health and Wellness). The sessions were very well attended, with experts in each area addressing the attendees and taking their questions. In addition, the staff conducted Barbershop Sessions, in which staff held informational sessions at various Black- owned barbershops and beauty parlors around the city.

Our Coalition Supporters (the nonprofit social justice organizations mentioned above) met regularly via Zoom in the fiscal year to receive updates about RJC activities, to exchange ideas about actions undertaken by their respective organizations, and to offer input to the RJC board and staff. We are grateful to have had the support of such partner organizations.
