The Sand River Region The Royal African Foundation funds strategic programs to protect the Sand Rivers migration routes that link the Mara, Serengetti, and Rift Valley ecosystems. Among the most biodiverse areas on Earth, it faces growing threats from land subdivision and unplanned development, which disrupt wildlife movement and increase human-wildlife conflcit. To address this, we support community education, enterprise, health, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation projects. We also support biodiversity research and monitoring, and advocacy efforts to preserve this essential landscape for people and wildlife alike.
KPSGA Curriculum Reform Project The Royal African Foundation supported the Kenya Professional Safari Guide Association KPSGA in modernising its training and certification system for local guides. Founded in 1996, the KPSGA created a merit-based system for local Kenyan safari guides to advance in their careers through its bronze, silver, and gold exams, which thousands of guides have taken. With our support, the examination council, led by KPSGA Gold Guide and environmental history professor Willis Okech Oyugi, has completed a comprehensive update of all three syllabi, with greater emphasis on conservation, ethics, hospitality, and environmental stewardship. New accreditations are being pursued, and course readers are in development to make these materials more accessible. This work aims to empower Kenyan guides to progress in their careers and become better custodians of Kenyas incredible natural heritage.
