Mission

RuckusRoots mission is to create art programs that cultivate environmental awareness and action in historically under-represented communities. Our goal is to foster inspired empowered and engaged citizens through interactive art-making. Our activities include in-school sustainable art programs teen and young adult apprenticeships with professional artists and multigenerational public art workshops.

A.L.I.V.E Art Living in Vibrant Environments Formerly the Rebel Garden Project encompassed 3 sites in 2024 - The rRebel Garden The Willows Wetland Preserve and the Friendship Garden at Eucalyptus Elemnetary in Hawthorne CA. This program engages community in three intersectional topics: urban microfarms native ecology and responsive community-led artworks. The programming reached 370 youth over 120 hours of programming and resulted in 2 large-scale murals as well as hundreds of crops planted and harvested in South Central Hawthorne and Gardena CA.

Wild Art at Glenfeliz Elementary. Over 3 rounds this 12-week program integrated collaborative art-making with lessons about plastic waste creative reuse wildlife endangerment and conservation for ages K-6th grade. Each group of students created one 4 x 5 collaged mural made entirely of repurposed materials like cardboard and painted plastic scraps! Students learned about wildlife featured in the piece while also learning arts skills like painting color theory and creative reuse. Program evaluations revealed 73% increase in feeling creatively inspired 23% confidence increase in visual art-making 61% increase in creative reuse arts skills 64% increase in feeling connected to their community. 24 classes were held with 155 students with 350 waste items repurposed into art.

From Earth to Art is an earth building series that teaches participants how to build benches fire pits and more out of natural materials like wild clay cob sand and straw. This program reached 65 participants over 10 sessions resulting in 120 artworks.
