Mission
The ruth stone house is a nonprofit literary arts organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of poet ruth stone and fostering the creation, study, and appreciation of contemporary poetry and the literary arts. Through residencies, workshops, publications, performances, and educational programming, we serve writers, artists, and the broader public by cultivating creativity, community, and access to the arts in rural vermont and beyond.

In-person retreats and workshops: the inward toward the greater myth retreat was held at in situ polyculture in 2024 - a five day immersive program combining poetry, psychoanalytic theory, and yoga. Participants engaged in writing workshops, theoretical discussions, and somatic practices under the guidance of poets biance stone and candace jensen.rsh also partnered with local schools and organizations, such as willowell and the goshen historical society to provide one-day workshops and literary events that support arts education in the community.
Literary events and community engagement: throughout 2024, ruth stone house hosted numerous public arts events, including the beer and broadsides letterpress and poetry series, live music at the house of poetry concerts featuring artists such as jolie holland and the pandora consort, and special readings by peots from across the country. A highlight of the year was youth laureate cider and broadsides, a collaborative celebration with sundog poety honoring vermont's first youth peot laureat, harmony belle devoe. These events promote artistic collaboration and community participation, often drawing full houses and bringing visitors from across vermont.
Publications and media - ruth stone house continued its publication of iterant, a national literary magazine now in its fifth year,e dited by walter stone and featuring peotry and art from a diverse range of voices. The ode & psyche podcast, hosted by biance stone, expanded its audience with episodes exploring rilke's duino elegies and interviews with poests such as forrest gander and ryan ruby. Both projects extend the organization's reach to a global literary audience.preservation, renovation, and capital campaign - the organization advanced its capital campaign, raising over $80,000 in 2024, iwth an additional $17,000 pledged. These funds supported major renovations, including rebuilding the historic kitchen and converting the back porch into a classroom and dining space. Volunteers and interns also contributed to preperty maintenance, garden restoration, and preparation for expanded public use of the ruth stone house as a cultural centerpartnerships and memberships - rsh strengthened community ties by joining the addison county chamber of commerce and the addison county economic development corporation. These memberships support visibility, collaboration, and sustainability efforts across the region.
