Save the Waves protects surf ecosystems around the world, forming coalitions with local communities and utilizing a unique combination of protected areas, stewardship, and grass-roots mobilization.

Protected areas:in 2024, save the waves continued to expand and improve the world surfing reserve and the surf protected area programs, implementing the following: 1) dedicated the oriente salvaje world surfing reserve, safeguarding over 12 diverse surf breaks and 19 kilometers of coastline in el salvador; 2) deployed stewardship funds to support local projects and solutions at the world surfing reserves; and 3) supported local partners in santa cruz to understand the impact of surfing on the economy; 4) worked in our surf protected areas to further protected area strategies in california, mexico, costa rica and the azores.

Stewardship and resilience:through our stewardship and resilience initiatives, save the waves 1) created new partnerships through our save the waves app; 2) identified new candidates as fellows to bring stewardship tools back into their own communities; 3) furthered the work for a new model of parametric insurance in the oriente salvaje world surf reserve that safeguards surf breaks, mangroves, and livelihoods of nearby communities from the impacts of extreme weather events.
