Youth engagement: for 2024, the youth engagement program awarded three students from brewer high school in morgan county, al $1,000 scholarships each to continue their post-high school education. The students were awarded the bob marshall excellence in volunteerism awards for their hundred's hours of volunteerism to the community, school, and junior reserve officer training corps activities prior to graduation in may. The matt dahl memorial ball field for 2024 offered the 639 students at legacy elementary school a safe, well-maintained play area to exercise and have fun, on a daily basis, along with several local youth ball teams to hold practice and games. The backstop and fence line were beautified by applying spray paint to cover areas showing wear and sun damage.
Heroes week 2024 provided 9 heroes and their families an opportunity to have a fellowship like none other. Each hero received a special homemade quilt. Flags were flown over the capitol in their honor and given gift bags by local vendors throughout the city. They were escorted to lake guntersville, to the us space and rocket center, to the veterans day parade and marine corps birthday ball. They received police escorts and were made to feel as important and needed as possible during this special week put on by semper fi community task force nov 2024.
The semper fi racing team was established in 2016 and in 2024 we were able to provide children of gold star families, wounded/injured veterans, and disabled first responders the opportunity to participate in the sport of quarter midget racing. Volunteers associated with the huntsville quarter midget association (www.hqma.org) and generous donors enabled these children to participate in a really fun sport that builds self-confidence, sharpens awareness and motor skills, and exposes them to the principles of engineering and physics that go into the race cars. We are all aware of the sacrifices made by our military members and first responders and while we are thankful for their sacrifice sometimes, we don't think of the effect this has on the children. Our mission is engaging children after the loss of a parent or having a parent disabled that can't do the things with their children that they would love to do but can't because of their physical limitations. The primary goal of semper fi racing is to demonstrate to these families that we are forever indebted to them for their sacrifice and to remind them that they are not alone.
