Our mission is to prevent trauma-related loss by substance overdose and suicide by building resiliency and empowering youth, families, and communities through advocacy, trauma education, peer support, and art- & nature-based intervention strategies. We work to build a trauma-informed community that supports and empowers those impacted by trauma, as well as, provide referrals for therapeutic services and resources for help.

Resilient Youth through Arts & Nature-Based Interventions: SLF expanded its arts-based prevention programming through school partnerships, community projects, and outdoor engagement. At Genesis Academy High School, SLF facilitated a year-long art curriculum for credit, meeting with students daily and integrating trauma-informed approaches with art history and mental health awareness. Students explored historical and contemporary artists with lived experiences of mental health challenges while practicing their own artistic skills. SLF also launched the "Migration of Change" Butterfly Project in partnership with community artist Adrian Garcia, engaging over 300 youth and senior citizens in painting wooden butterflies with messages of hope, peace, and love. Additional open studio events, including First Fridays, Family Saturdays, and after-school programs, provided ongoing creative access for the public. SLF also incorporated somatic practices such as salsa dance, connecting movement to emotional regulation and resilience. Nature-based interventions included hiking and community outings with youth groups, promoting wellness through outdoor experiences.

Education, Outreach, & Community Engagement: SLF strengthened community partnerships and expanded outreach in 2024 through collaborations with organizations such as Rising Youth Theatre, Cultural Coalition, Bring Change to Mind, St. Vincent de Paul, Garfield Elementary, and the City of Phoenix Aeroterra community. SLF provided arts-based activities and prevention education at more than 20 community resource events, reaching diverse families across Phoenix. Highlights included co-hosting the Garfield Neighborhood "Christmas in Garfield" celebration with Aim Right Ministries, providing circle-painting meditations with the Semicolon Society, and contributing to public projects with Jones Studio Architects and Genesis students. On March 7, SLF hosted its annual Get Your heART On! celebration at the Arizona Center, honoring Skye's legacy with art-making, resource sharing, and family-friendly engagement. In addition, we provided Narcan and educational resources on mental health, trauma, substance abuse prevention, suicide prevention, dangers and facts on opioids, and local and national referrals to care and hotline, crisis numbers. Through these efforts, SLF reached hundreds of families with prevention education, creative expression, and resources to support resilience.
