The Bienestar/Neema Coordinated School Health Program (BN CSHP) is a school- and family-based program used to control and prevent childhood obesity. It was designed by staff of Presa Publishing LLC and the Social and Health Research Center, in collaboration with teachers, school food service staff, parents, students, and health experts from several universities. The BN CSHP encompasses curricula from preschool to eighth grade and is designed to target the four environments that influence childrens health behaviors:-Healthy Lifestyles Healthy Minds (Health)-Moving For Life (P.E.)-Eat to Live (Child Nutrition/School Food Service)-MyFamily/MiFamilia (Home)The most important feature of the BN CSHP is the results! In large studies, the program has shown positive results improving the health of children and adults. It has increased fruit and vegetables and decreased dietary fat intake; increased fitness levels; decreased obesity rates, waist circumference, and body mass index; decreased blood glucose, and serum insulin levels; and increased healthier food options in school cafeterias. Adults who participated in the Bienestar lost on average 8 pounds if they attended at least 8 sessions.
The Social and Health Research Center, Inc. implements National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) Lifestyle Intervention and the Bienestar Adult Healthy Lifestyle (BAHLP) program to prevent obesity and related chronic disease. The National DPP Lifestyle Intervention curriculum is based on the curriculum from the Diabetes Prevention Program research study supported by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease. This curriculum has been shown to decrease type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. The BAHLP is based on the Medicare-reimbursed Intensive behavior therapy for obesity. The program also has been shown to control and prevent obesity and related chronic disease.
