The society is a national professional organization for journalists, the purpose of which is to aid, encourage, and promote a free press, high professional standards, and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism.

Programs

Spj works to raise awareness and advocate for freedom of the press and the first amendment. It does this through programs like ethics week, sunshine week and its ethics response hotline. This is all part of a larger effort to disseminate information about ethical journalism, educate the public about the importance of a free and unfettered press and advocate for journalists' rights.

Spj's 12 regions host spring conferences every year that provide training, awards ceremonies, networking and more to spj members and nonmember journalists. This year's conferences were held in new york city, minneapolis, memphis, cleveland, san francisco, portland, san marco, texas.
