Education, exhibitions, and community engagement - ssaam continued to deliver impactful cultural and educational programming designed to connect the public with african american history and heritage. In 2024, the museum launched its original exhibition the head that wears the crown: black women's headwear from slavery to freedom and presented the immersive 1899 camp meeting reenactment; both recognized nationally with awards of excellence from the american association for state and local history (aaslh). The annual juneteenth "freedom forward" celebration welcomed more than a hundred visitors for live music, performances, storytelling, and family activities on the museum's historic grounds, marking a continued tradition of intergenerational learning and joy. With support from the mellon foundation, ssaam began developing a youth and adult visitor's guide to enhance the interpretive experience and deepen engagement with its exhibitions and historic sites. The organization also laid the groundwork for the possibility of an in-school curriculum, inspired by local african american stories that connect students to national conversations of historic relevance. The museum expanded its part-time staff to support education, collections, and community engagement, and enhanced its administrative systems for long-term sustainability. Ssaam also expanded its national and regional partnerships, adding to existing relationships with the mellon foundation, the somerset county cultural & heritage commission, and the new jersey historic trust by building new connections with the national trust for historic preservation's african american cultural heritage action fund via the preserving black churches grant program. These collaborations ensure continued alignment with leading institutions committed to cultural preservation, equity in public history, and the protection of african american heritage sites. The museum's national recognition through the aaslh awards of excellence and its acceptance as a new jersey black heritage trail site further affirmed ssaam's role as a trusted and innovative steward of african american heritage. These milestones reflect ssaam's growing capacity, national reach, and emergence as a model for small museums advancing inclusive, place-based storytelling.
