Mission

Global advocate for sulphur, representing all stakeholders actively engaged in producing, buying, selling, handling, transporting or adding value to sulphur. The institute promotes the ongoing use and uninterrupted efficient and safe handling and transport of all sulphur products while protecting the best interests of the environment.

Programs

7 programs

Membership - as determined by the board of directors, the institute shall have several classes of membership who are entitled to the benefits of membership as described in the institute's bylaws.

Environment, health and safety - to monitor, share, evaluate, address, and expand knowledge about environment, health, and safety issues impacting sulphur operations, logistics, handling, and storage; members work proactively to plan for addressing changes; and improve practices through information sharing.

Transportation, regulation & logistics - to advocate responsible and beneficial resolution of issues that are associated with international, regional, and local regulations governing sulphur transportation and logistics - from production facilities and terminals by rail, truck, barge, and marine vessel - on behalf of members.

Sulphuric acid (h2so4) working group - to expand knowledge of environmental and safety issues associated with sulphuric acid operations; improve practices through information sharing; and advocate responsible resolution of sulphuric acid transportation, handling, and logictics regulatory issues.

Education - to serve as a reliable source of information for the sulphur industry worldwide; to maintain and provide information that can serve to inform and educate stakeholders.

Staff stewarded projects - to research and maintain information regarding specific topics and issues that are not covered in the various working groups.

Sulphur information and advocacy - to maintain and provide information that can serve and educate stakeholders and others on key targeted areas of sulphur advocacy and respond to potentially detrimental misinformation regarding sulphur, its origin, transportation, handling, long-term storage and uses. Information, advocacy, education, and promotion facilitate increased sulphur demand by removing hurdles for private industry to develop commercial scale sulphur-based fertilizer businesses.
