Mission

The Sunflower School opened its doors in 1923 and operated until 1964 when it closed. Between 1964 and 1990 the school building and grounds were used for various purposes. The Sunflower Consolidated Preservation Commission, Inc. leased the building and grounds in March 1990 for a period of 19 years at an annual rental of $150. There was an increase in the annual rental to $360 beginning in 2008.The Commission's goal is to restore the school building. Funding is largely raised through the State of Mississippi from an automobile tag program. The Commission hopes to purchase the land and building from the Coahoma County Board of Education and make it a museum.
