Surgical data science research: our artificial intelligence/machine learning (ai/ml) research team achieved a great deal. In 2024, 8 out of 10 research abstracts submitted to major surgical journals and conferences based on sdsc research collaborations were accepted, and we have 12 more in progress for 2025. We have developed in-house 11 surgical ml models enabling the quantitative study of 20+ different surgical procedures. We have established 30 research activities with academic medical research institutions to study surgical video footage together. Highlights include our research on vestibular schwannomas with neurosurgeon dr. Christopher graffeo, md ms, of the university of oklahoma and with dr. Juan c. Fernandez-miranda, md, facs, from the stanford university department of neurosurgery to develop the world's first ai-powered hands-on surgical course. In addition to expert instruction in endoscopic brain surgery, the course included an interactive cadaveric dissection with real-time ai statistics and pre- and post-course feedback through sdsc's surgical video platform (svp). Our ai/ml team has grown - our head of ai/ml supervises three ml engineers, a surgical adviser, and nine enthusiastic volunteers who are surgeons, residents, and medical students.

Education: we attended 19 surgical conferences in 2024, building a community of excellence with medical researchers and demonstrating commitment and engagement in the ever-evolving conversation around ai/ml applications in surgery. We postponed hosting the second iteration of our conference until early 2025, but sponsorship activity has already been very enthusiastic, including by medtronic and the american association of neurological surgeons (aans). We highlight our research and educational thought leadership through our blog, www.surgicalvideo.io/blog. In 2024 we wrote sixteen articles, collectively viewed thousands of times by a a global audience of clinicians, students, residents, and researchers.

Expenses: $135K

Patient safety organization: given the volume of work to do in other programs, this program was de-prioritized in 2024. We still expect to pursue it in the future, once proper certifications are in place. We engaged the top attorney in the nation on the formation and maintenance of psos to guide this process for us at the appropriate time.
