Mission

Sustainable Conservation advances the collaborative stewardship of Californias land, air, and water for the benefit of nature and people. For over three decades, Sustainable Conservation has built coalitions of people with different interests to catalyze conservation success. By listening deeply and honoring all perspectives, we build common ground from which to forge a better path forward for our Golden State.

Programs

3 programs

Soil Health - Healthier soil benefits the crops that grow out of it, the water that flows through it, and the people that depend on it. While healthy soil practices that benefit carbon sequestration are well-researched, our collective understanding of the water benefits of healthy soils is more limited. Sustainable Conservation works in the soil-water nexus to understand how improving our soils can help California build a more sustainable water supply and protect water quality.

Expenses: $892K

Dairies- Waste Not program - Nitrate is the most common pollutant from human activities primarily from over application of manure and synthetic fertilizers on crops vital to Californias agricultural economy and our collective health. But it doesnt need to be this way. Sustainable Conservation promotes appropriate, scalable solutions to reimagine waste by reusing manure nutrients, connecting farmers and their land to a circular resource economy, reducing groundwater and greenhouse gas pollution, and building soil health.

Expenses: $844K

Accelerating Restoration - Despite notable recent successes in accelerating restoration permitting, Californias current regulatory process does not meet our urgent need for landscape-level restoration projects to bolster our climate resilience. For over 20 years, Sustainable Conservation has partnered with government agencies and restorationists to increase the pace and scale of ecological restoration. By developing expedited permitting tools, we work to put habitat restoration on a more efficient regulatory path separate from traditional development.
