Sustainable Water Energy And Economic Transition In Alabama

SWEET Alabama is a "just transition organization focusing on democratic economies and energy independence within Birmingham and the beautiful state of Alabama. We are connecting people to resources to achieve these goals. During 2023 SWEET Alabama hosted our second annual Green Economies Youth Fellowship, where we trained youth between the ages of 18-24 how to retrofit homes, organize their neighbors, and expand their understanding of housing and environmental justice. The Fellows retrofitted homes of their neighbors, developed training materials for distribution, hosted community pop-up events to distribute resources, and canvassed door-to-door. SWEET Alabama also worked in North Birmingham alongside our partner organizers to implement a comprehensive "Compensation and Relocation Survey" of residents in the EPA 35th Ave Superfund site, receiving over 200 responses. The results will be used to create a "People's Compensation and Relocation Plan" to address the issues facing the residents living in the Superfund Site.
