Mission

The organization's mission is to stimulate the use and enjoyment of the swart-wilcox house museum by maintaining an association of persons interested in the museum; to develop and continue educational programs that promote life-long learning & appreciation of local history; to cooperate with the city of oneonta, ny, in developing activities related to oneonta's history and the history of the swart-wilcox house, the oldest building in the city; and to encourage the general public and other organizations to participate in supporting and using the historical programs and projects developed and offered by the swart-wilcox house museum in order to appreciate the on-going historical significance of the leatherstocking region of new york state and of the city of oneonta in particular.

Programs

2 programs

Adult education programs in local history - this is a special series of programs for adults from april until october. Attendees average about 20 people per session and sessions are open to all adults. Programs are held inside the house museum followed by a tour of the museum. Presenters all donate their time and expertise and attendees include members of the local rotary club, dar, local historic societies, catskill area teachers center, other local organizations, and any other interested adults. Again, there is no charge for these programs.

Local history curriculum & classes for local 4th grade students: the board members of the museum provide a series of 8 classes in local history with a focus on the history of the swart-wilcox house, built in 1807. There are 2 classes held in each of the 4 elementary schools in the city of oneonta. The 1st class includes a power point presentation followed by a special learning activity. The 2nd class, given a week later, involves a field trip to the swart-wilcox house museum where the students get a tour of the museum and do a hands-on craft project involving something they saw at the museum. This program involves approximately 110 4th grade students in the four elementary schools in the city of oneonta. All services are donated.
