The expenses involve payments to the publisher for producing and circulating the journals as well as a prize for the best paper published during the year. The esa maintains a website to provide information about the association's activities and its conferences. There are expenses to run that as well as miscellaneous back office expenses. Expenses also include fees from the credit card gateway. Revenues from the portion of the membership dues not required to pay for journal publication are used to pay for these expenses.
