The International Snow Leopard Trust

Snow leopard conservation, policy & cooperation:in 2024, across four snow leopard range countries (mongolia, pakistan, kyrgyzstan, and india), more than 31,000 households from 177 communities participated in snow leopard-friendly conservation programs. Collectively, these communities safeguarded 60,000 sq km of snow leopard habitat, which contains approximately 15 percent of the global snow leopard population. Community-based initiatives include sustainable orchards, dairy enterprises, snow leopard enterprises, beekeeping, community ranger programs, wildlife monitoring, livestock insurance schemes, sustainable tourism development, livestock vaccination campaigns, corral reinforcement, grazing-free reserves, and crop protection initiatives.the global snow leopard and ecosystem protection program (gslep), established in 2013 with foundational support from the snow leopard trust, continued to promote intergovernmental collaboration, resulting in the protection of more than 150,000 sq km of snow leopard habitat. Combined with the 60,000 sq km of habitat safeguarded by local communities engaged in snow leopard-friendly conservation programs, this brings the total area of enhanced protection to over 200,000 sq km in 2024.with our support, the united nations formally recognized october 23 as the international day of the snow leopard, underscoring the global significance of snow leopard conservation.in 2024, we also initiated new partnerships with established conservation practitioners in nepal, where we have launched new snow leopard conservation programs with a local partner.

Promoting ethical nature conservation (by enabling practitioners to engage effectively with local and indigenous communities):the ethical conservation alliance (eca), established in 2023 with foundational support from the snow leopard trust, promoted integrity, respect, and equity in conservation practice worldwide. In 2024, 36 nations, including 64 government and organizational leaders and 40 partner organizations, formally committed to adopting and promoting ethical conservation practices. Through nine structured training workshops, 327 conservation professionals were equipped with practical skills in ethical community engagement. Notably, women constituted approximately two-thirds of all participants, reflecting the organization's ongoing commitment to equitable and inclusive conservation leadership.the snow leopard network (sln), established in 2002 with foundational support from snow leopard trust, serves as a critical forum for the dissemination of best practices and scientific advances in snow leopard conservation. In 2024, sln further strengthened its role as a global platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, expanding membership to more than 700 individuals, including 232 emerging leaders representing 23 countries.

Education and outreach:in 2024, a total of 1,659 students, graduates, and postgraduates participated in environmental education programs organized or supported by the snow leopard trust. Sixty-two eco-camps and nature clubs provided opportunities for students to engage in experiential learning focused on nature and conservation. Three hundred eighty-eight youth in kyrgyzstan participated in virtual eco-clubs designed to strengthen environmental awareness and leadership skills.education and outreach programs benefited 21 communities across four countries, with over 1,600 educational newsletters and pamphlets distributed in kyrgyzstan, mongolia, and pakistan.the global #strides4snowleopards campaign engaged participants from 52 countries and reached more than one million individuals through digital platforms, fostering increased global awareness of snow leopard conservation.
