Mission
Our mission is to conduct and support innovative research, conservation and education that results in effective stewardship of our oceans.
Programs
3 programs
Improved fisheries management: the institute is conducting research aimed at improving the management of both traditional bahamian fisheries (nassau grouper, queen conch) and emerging fisheries such as parrotfish, and bioprospecting for natural products derived from sponges, sea fans and other organisms. This research is aimed at promoting sustainable harvests that preserve the viability of harvested stocks and promote ecosystem health. We are also engaging local communities to promote complaince with fisheries regulations and other best practices to minimize impacts of fishing to ecosystems.
Mangrove restoration: mangrove restoration involves rehabilitating and reestablishing degraded or destroyed ecosystems. Our approach includes a range of techniques tailored to specific environmental conditions and biological interactions within mangrove ecosystems e.g. Planting and propagule dispersal, hydrological (blocked creek) restoration, and green infrastructure.
Community conservation education and action program provides, education, outreach and community engagement programs that compliment the institutes research programs. This program is aimed at developing conservation leaders and promoting conservation actions through targeted communications, training programs to build conservation capacity in the bahamas, and working directly with stakeholders like fishers and divers to promote positive practices that promote healthy marine ecosystems.
