Mission
To build leaders on the court, in the classroom, and in the community by providing academic, wellness, and social development programs alongside recreational and competitive tennis instruction for youth and adults. Sportsmen's tennis and enrichment center (stec) is committed to improving life opportunities for youth in boston's blue hill corridor while welcoming a diverse community from the greater boston area.
Programs
3 programs
The learning center: the learning center (tlc) offers after-school academic instruction and homework support for elementary, middle, and high school students. All academic and enrichment programs are paired with tennis. Students in grades k-12 are supported in the successful completion of their academic journey. The programs that support their success include a comprehensive after-school program, operating monday-friday from 2:30-6:00pm with a focus on literacy and math skill development, as well as enrichment activities that support their social emotional health and wellness. We partner with local elementary and middle schools to provide intensive support to a cohort of 36 students who attend our academic after-school program each week. Our students also participate in 3-4 hours of tennis instruction weekly. Stec provides scholarships to in-need recipients. For over 10 years, we have participated in the summer learning project co-managed by boston public schools and boston after school & beyond. This full-day integrated learning experience aims to prevent summer slippage and shares the common goal of academic progress in math and language arts, and improvement in the act skills. We offer a 8 week summer camp academic enrichment program which includes structured reading time in addition to daily academic enrichment activities to address the skills drop-off that occurs when students are not actively engaged in literacy and math. Tennis instruction is also combined with swimming, soccer, golf, arts and crafts, and field trips.
Center for community wellness: the mission of the mass general brigham center for community wellness (ccw) at sportsmen's tennis and enrichment center is to create a culture of health by laying down the foundations for health justice. Ccw provides resources for health & wellness and collaborates with others to dismantle structural barriers and rectify injustices that contribute to health disparities in the under-resourced boston communities of dorchester, mattapan and roxbury, known as the blue hill corridor. We provide programming focusing on different health concerns such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, renal disease, substance use disorders and more. Over 100 free fitness classes and 10 community health forums are offered through our wellness center. 1600 on-site wellness screenings were conducted by our partners at mass general brigham. We extend our wellness program across all age groups, including many youth-based programs. Violence prevention is also a core component of our health and wellness strategy, and the ccw also runs in coordinated fashion with our volley against violence evening programs supported by the boston police department.
