The Studio Museum In Harlem

Marketing and communications: communications worked closely with core programs to expand engagement with the studio museum's activities. The communications team comprehensively implemented an identity rebrand, heralding the impending opening of the new building. Additionally, a new website launched featuring the updated brand with expanded access to the museum's collections and programs.

Learning and engagement: our learning and engagement department remained dedicated to providing robust engagement with art through a range of offerings that invite audiences to explore ideas through engagement with art. In fy 24, school and community partnerships continued to transform classrooms and community spaces into explorative laboratories where students, families, youth audiences and older adults experience art beyond museum walls. Our education team collaborated closely with our school & community partners to offer sessions with artist educators that focused on care and play while offering alternative ways of thinking about art making and creativity. Early-childhood families gathered monthly for story time and artmaking at lil' studio in partnership with the nypl harlem library. This work was complemented by online videos and resources made available on our website to provide a "museum from home" experience. Studio museum institute programs continued to serve as a site for incubation, ideation, and support through fellowship, internship, museum professionals seminar, and museum education practicum opportunities. This year's iteration of museums as systems invited attendees to conversations about resources through key themes including love and care and creative fundraising. Expanding the walls welcomed sixteen local teens exploring community and history through the lens of photography during the 8-month intensive program, culminating in an exhibition on the museum's website. The public programs department organized free public events in connection with our exhibition programming featuring artists, curators, and scholars.

Capital project: the studio museum is currently constructing the first building in its history, created expressly for the needs of the institution and its communities. Designed by adjaye associates with cooper robertson, the new building occupies the site on west 125th street on which the studio museum had been operating since 1982, in a century-old commercial structure adapted by the celebrated architect j. Max bond, jr. Undertaken as a public-private initiative in partnership with the city of new york, the new 82,000-square-foot building will enable the studio museum to: expand its internationally renowned exhibitions and, for the first time, simultaneously enable it to display installations from its unparalleled permanent collection; offer increased educational opportunities and public programs for its growing and diverse audience; welcome visitors with an enhanced experience; and establish a distinguished architectural presence on west 125th street, as a cultural anchor for the harlem community. Additionally, space for exhibitions and the museum's signature artist-in-residence program will more than double, and indoor and outdoor public space (including space for educational activities and other programs) will increase by almost seventy percent.exhibitions: from may to october 2024, through our multi-year partnership with the museum of modern art, we presented projects: tadaskia, which featured the artist's expansive unbound book, ave preta mistica mystical black bird (2022), in dialogue with a monumental wall drawing and a set of sculptures made in response to the gallery space. And ever an edge: studio museum artists in residence 2022-23 featured the work of this cohort created while in residence and was on view november 2023-april 2024 at moma ps1. Between matter and memory: expanding the walls 2023, the exhibition for our signature teen program, expanding the walls: making connections between photography, history, and community, was on view online august 2023-july 2024, and the harlem postcards series also continued in its online format.retail and visitor services: working closely with core programs, the retail team developed the studio museum in harlem collection, a suite of products inspired by the new brand. They also created product capsules in partnership with studio museum artists and artist estates. The team is preparing to open a brick-and-mortar store in the new building.building and operations: in preparation for the september 2024 opening of studio museum headquarters (smhq), across from the studio museum building, at 119 west 125th street, the building operations team oversaw the buildout and furnishing of the 16,700 usable square foot space that would hold a majority of the museum's administrative and program staff and offices. This included consolidation of technology, furnishings, and records held in the existing satellite offices leased around harlem.
